About Us
Community Tutoring is a 501(c)(3) non-profit focused on making high quality, no-cost individual tutoring available to all students on a local level. Through these interactions we strive to create unique learning experiences and greater sense of community.
We recognized that one of the common ingredients leading to academic success was private tutoring. The trouble is while quality tutoring services are readily available, the costs can make it impossible for many students to get the extra help and individualized attention they need. This is unfair so we set out to do something about it.
Our thought was if we could get the highest-achieving students in communities around the country to volunteer their time to tutor local students we could correct this inequity. As with any new idea, best to ask our mom (former teacher) if she liked the idea, and she did. We then asked our grandma (also a teacher) and she too was excited- another good sign. By the time we got to our aunts, uncle and a few cousins (all teachers) it was clear we were on to something.
Feeling empowered, we then started asking the best students we knew in our community if they would be interested in helping and everyone said yes. We then we reached out to top students we knew from other communities, and they too said yes! They were all happy to share what they had learned, giving back by helping others in their community (and beyond). A small idea has become a big one!
With tutors on board, we now needed to see how students would react to being tutored by other students from their community. This too clicked immediately. The students were able to relate to one another and it helped create a connection that improved communication, and kick started the learning process. We found that both students were even more engaged because they had grown up nearby and had things in common and together were building community.

Why Community Tutoring? In today's fast-paced world, many children are struggling to keep up academically. Today’s students don’t have it easy. Many missed crucial in-person learning experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pervasive influence of social media has had a tremendous effect on students’ attention spans and learning styles. Classrooms are often crowded and individualized attention can be hard to come by. This is tough stuff. Teachers are doing an incredible job trying to keep students on track. AI will hopefully help, but human connection and community is still an important part of the learning and growing process and individualized local tutoring can help bridge these gaps and free online sessions make one on one tutoring more accessible than ever.
-
How effective is it?We think very. While direct academic results vary by student, a consistent theme typically plays out: students grow more confident and become more engaged with their work and those are big wins.
-
